The floating bar has a silent majesty about it and we want to get onboard. Perhaps we shall give it a miss, as the alternating floor color may make us break out our most rad dance moves, showing everyone else up. Unfortunately, the ferry is not bound for international waters, but instead sticks to transporting the good Japanese people to and fro. Tickets cost around $21 (2500 yen) and the galactic-based sea cruiser is available for private hire, too. If you are heading to Tokyo, don't miss it, or do, it's your choice—you really need to start making decisions for yourself. [Sci Fi Tech]

บรรยากาศภายในเรือ

เส้นทางเดินเรือ

LA, Sydney, Hong Kong, Tokyo. Great cities are born by the ocean. Yet the last time we went on a trip to the sea, it took a good couple hours, and the destination was far away from the 23 wards. Sadly, since the waterfront of Tokyo Bay plays such an insignificant part of the city’s social scene, it’s easy to forget how close it is. So, just as a reminder, we set out east, around the loop and over Rainbow Bridge, toward floating bar Jicoo.

And what a pot of gold we found. Though the “booze cruise” is hardly a newcomer to Tokyo, this one stands high above the rest in terms of style. Why? Well, it’s the whole package.

Jicoo’s crew is smartly dressed and exceedingly courteous. They welcomed us aboard their space-age craft designed by anime cartoonist Leiji Matsumoto, served us stiff drinks, and spun lounge music. As the boat shuttled between Odaiba and Hinode Pier (customers can get on or off at either terminus) we took in views of the glowing skyline to the west, with the orange Tokyo Tower featuring prominently. Out the opposite windows, reflections of the myriad quirky attractions of Odaiba shimmered on the water’s dark, rippled plane.

On a ship like this, a bottle of Moet (¥8,000) seemed only too fitting. The bubbly was succeeded by V-shaped glasses of cold, black Guinness (¥700) for the lads, cerulean China Blues (¥1,000) for the ladies. An assortment of cheeses (¥1,400) and mixed nuts (¥600) kept our hunger at bay. Our only beef concerned the selection of beers on tap (two).

By the third or fourth trip under the bridge, we were staring at the bottoms of double gin and tonics (¥1,000), downing shots of red liquids and generally throwing good judgment to the breeze. (Actually there is no breeze, as the vessel is encased in a handsome glass shield). We were having a fine time, dreading last call. All too soon, the bitter hour of 11 o’clock arrived, so we settled our bill and said adieu, happy to have reconnected with that sea-loving inner child.

Boarding fee of ¥2,500 includes one drink. Passengers board near Odaiba’s Statue of Liberty (Nearest stn: Daiba) on the half-hour and at Hinode Pier (Nearest stn: Hinode) on the hour, Thu-Sat 8-11pm. Smoking is permitted near the bar in the rear of the boat. Tel: 0120-049-490 (toll-free).
